When you enjoy reading together, your child will associate reading with the warmth and closeness you provide while sharing this experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research also shows that reading with your child increases their vocabulary and sets them up as lifelong readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did you know?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When your child is engaging with books and storytelling, they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing a love of reading;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having fun with rhyming words and the sounds words make;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enjoying the rhythm of language, developing their imagination and interests;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enjoying a positive literacy experience with you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why not try some of the below activities incorporating shared reading?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Magic Beach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a wonderful book with so much to see in the illustrations. If you don\u2019t have the book, you can find it on Youtube <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kjxHu0uATfg\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reading the book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google pictures of real-life rock pools with sea life living in them; see if you can describe the creatures and name these;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have any shells in the house, take a look to see if any of the same shells are living in the rock pools;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are near a beach, go for a beach walk and pick up shells along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dear Zoo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An old favourite. Click here to experience the author reading the story \u2013 enjoy the animal noises and make these with your child as you listen or read!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reading the book, why not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the zoo together \u2013 virtually, of course! \u2013 with Victoria Zoo\u2019s live cam showing some of their animal homes. Find their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoo.org.au\/animals-at-home\/\">live cams here.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explore your child\u2019s toy box together and find as many animals as you can. Use some blocks or boxes or Lego and make a zoo for the animals.
